Give 'em Helen!

Despite the devastation of the 2016 election and everything that's happened since then, over the last year we've been given some sign of hope as Democrats have begun slowly taking back ground across the country in state and local elections. An upcoming special election in Pennsylvania offers a great opportunity to build on that momentum, to continue shifting our country to the left and energizing people before the midterm elections this November.

Please join us on Friday, April 20, 2018, from 6:30-8:30 at the home of Diane Kolyer and Phil Abraham in downtown Manhattan for drinks with Helen Tai, Democratic candidate for Pennsylvania’s 178th Legislative district. Helen is running in a special election on May 15th to fill a vacant seat held by a Republican representative who has resigned.

Why do we care about a special election for the Pennsylvania House of Representatives? Because battleground states like Pennsylvania are ground zero for attacks on progressive principles and fair elections. Effective gun control legislation in PA can keep New Yorkers safer. What corporations pour into Pennsylvania’s water reaches our taps. And gerrymandered districts drawn by Republican state legislators have locked in a Republican majority, both in the state legislature and in Pennsylvania's congressional seats.

The daughter of Chinese immigrants, Helen earned a degree in statistics from the University of Michigan and a graduate degree from Penn State. Ten years ago, she started a management consulting firm where she works with businesses to provide transformational change. Helen is also a committed public servant. She is in her fifth year on the Solebury Township board of supervisors, which she now chairs, and she co-founded Fearless Heart Aikido, a non-profit that teaches the philosophy and wisdom of aikido.

We need people like Helen at every level of government. She supports common-sense gun legislation, like banning the sale of assault weapons and bump stocks, and will fight for laws that protect the environment. With Helen in office, we’ll have one more ally in the fight against the unsafe, unequal, and intolerant GOP agenda.

Even if you can't attend, please donate to show Helen that New Yorkers support her candidacy. Every little bit helps bring us closer to putting a strong, progressive woman in office.
